ARTIST STATEMENT
Femininity is a vast, sacred, and complex idea. I examine aspects of the feminine that concern love, self-perception, everyday rituals and struggles, and the various experiences of women throughout history. I draw from the well of my own life as well as those of family and friends, historic figures, and strangers who share their feelings on social media. Using a variety of media, I reference the style of Renaissance masters and collections of vintage photographs, focusing on classic imagery of beauty and grace. Shades of pink, cosmetics, pearls, lace, and other such items can be found in these works to create a girlish look while delivering thought-provoking and melancholic messages. In Evanescent, I examine the fleeting nature of youth and beauty and the human urge to hold onto those things. In Big Spender, I create a commentary on the stereotypical “shopaholic” woman. In creating these pieces, I am continuously relating to and connecting with other women in the world as well as becoming more comfortable in exploring myself, and what it personally means to be a woman.
